      $15 million for a new arrival experience at The Birmingham Zoo

      The Birmingham Zoo will soon have a brand new look thanks to the recent approval of a $15 million capital campaign.The funds, which were approved by the zoo board, will cover the cost of a newly-renovated front entrance, including an Asian Forest and a new plaza. Also in the works is a transformation of the 59-year-old zoo's front entrance, which will become a plaza complete with a state-of-the-art classroom and a new exhibit to house tigers, orangutans and siamang monkeys.{} Earlier this week, the Birmingham City Council approved a resolution to raise $7.5 million in bonds toward the zoo's campaign project. "The Zoo has been a distinguished attraction for the Birmingham community for nearly 60 years," Birmingham Mayor William Bell said. "The new renovations will be an exciting opportunity for the community to come together and watch this landmark grow and develop into an even greater institution."The {}economic impact from this $15 million investment is projected at $31.5 million.{} Zoo President and CEO William Foster said the other half of the investment goal will be raised through private donations.
