One of the five victims in Friday night's single-vehicle accident has died, Sgt. Randy Christian of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office reports.

James David Shirley, 16, of Center Point, died at an area hospital due to injuries he sustained in an accident at the 6700 Block of Trussville-Clay Road.

"Our hearts and prayers are with the victim's family and the community." Christian said in a release.

Police say a 17-year-old female was driving a 2002 Ford Escape around 5:15 p.m. when she suddenly lost control, leaving the road and striking a large rock in an adjacent ditch. The female drive suffered only minor injuries, but her four passengers, including Shirley, suffered serious injuries in the accident.

All five victims were transported to an area hospital.
