FORKLAND, Alabama -- Two days after being arrested on a felony theft charge, Forkland Mayor Derrick Biggs has reportedly sent termination letters to two city water department employees, ABC 33/40 has learned. Biggs, who is accused of stealing over $6,000 from the water department, sent the letters to two of the six workers in the business office. The employees went to city hall Friday morning to discuss the letters with the city attorney and to determine whether the mayor has the authority to terminate them.
Biggs surrendered to authorities Wednesday and was booked into the Greene County Jail, charged with first-degree theft of property, a felony, and a misdemeanor count of tampering with government records.
ABC 33/40 will continue to follow this story and provide updates as more information becomes available.
