DeMarcus Antoine Thompkins, 21, of Birmingham, has been charged with Capital Murder in connection with the murder of 28-year-old Nathaniel Williams Jr., the Fairfield Police Department reports.

Earlier on Friday, police reported that they had made an arrest in the homicide investigation of Williams after Thompkins turned surrendered to authorities Thursday night.

Thompkins, a Sherman Heights resident, reportedly admitted to shooting and killing Williams inside a vehicle in front of the victim's home at 320 Oakmont Street around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday night. In a taped confession, Thompkins reportedly told investigators that after the shooting, he drove the victim to Fairfield where he proceeded to remove Williams' body from the vehicle, placing him on the side of a street two blocks from Miles College.

Thompkins then traveled to Selma, Ala. to dump and destroy evidence from the homicide, including the vehicle, which investigators have since recovered. A search is underway for the murder weapon(s).
