23-year-old man arrested for drug trafficking at La Quinta Inn in Homewood
A 23-year-old man was arrested in a hotel room by Homewood Police Wednesday morning after being found in possession of a gun and drugs.
Robert L. Thomas, of Birmingham, was charged with drug trafficking, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana after foot-patrol officers found him in possession of several clear plastic baggies of cocaine, lortab pain medicine and a plastic bag of marijuana in his La Quinta Inn hotel room at 60 State Farm Parkway.
Officers were conducting a routine patrol at the hotel when they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from Thomas' room at 10:40 a.m. yesterday. After speaking to the suspect, officers observed a gun and drugs in an open drawer inside Thomas' room, prompting the arrest.
Following a complete search of the room, another plastic bag of cocaine and digital scales were discovered. Police also determined that the gun in Thomas' possession was stolen out of Tarrant.
Thomas is currently being held in the Homewood City Jail on bonds totaling $57,800.
