      3 West Chilton County Volunteer Fire Department officials arrested on theft charges

      CHILTON COUNTY, Alabama -- A continuing investigation into the theft of Fire Department funds in central Alabama has led to the arrest of three West Chilton County Volunteer Fire Department officials, the state fire marshal's office announced today.

      Two former treasurers -- Donna Tate, 40, and Apache Corona, 39, were taken into custody Tuesday.{} Both were charged with first-degree theft of property, though, Tate, who's being held in the Elmore County Jail on bonds totaling $100,000, also faces an extortion charge.{} Corona's bond has been set at $50,000.

      Steve Tate, a Chilton County sheriff's deputy and fire chief, was arrested today, charged with first-degree theft of property and first-degree extortion. His bond was set at $100,000.

      An investigation remains ongoing.
