31-year-old man shot, killed in Smithfield; suspect in custody


The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives are conducting a homicide investigation. The incident occurred on Friday at approximately 3:00 p.m., at 517 10th Court North.The victim has been identified as Derrick King, 31, of Birmingham, Alabama.North Precinct officers arrived to investigate a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located the victim lying on the grass suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Birmingham Fire and Rescue arrived and transported the victim to U.A.B. Hospital for additional treatment. Hospital staff later pronounced the victim deceased. {}Officers learned that the victim had a verbal altercation with the suspect just before the shooting. The suspect is in custody. Investigators learned that the suspect was released from prison in November of 2012 for a 2005 homicide.If there is anyone who has information pertaining to the case, they are encouraged to contact the B.P.D. Stanley Chatman, 25, of Birmingham, is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail after being charged with murder in connection to the shooting death of Derrick King on Friday afternoon in Smithfield.

Chatman's bond has been set at $75,000.
