PEARLAND, Tex. -- A 39-year-old Mountain Brook man was killed Wednesday morning after his small plane crashed during a landing attempt in Pearland, Tex., authorities confirmed to ABC 33/40.

Joe Frank Lassiter III, a Montgomery native and Birmingham-area attorney, was flying solo from Austin to Galveston in a Beechcraft King Air when poor visibility forced him to divert from his flight plan and attempt a landing at the Pearland Regional Airport. According to a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson, Lassiter was unable to land on his first attempt and proceeded to circle the twin-engine plane around for a second attempt when he crashed in a field around 8:30 a.m., killing him instantly.

The FAA is currently investigating the accident. The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.

Lassiter, a graduate of Auburn University who worked as an attorney at the Birmingham law firm of Maynard, Cooper & Gayle before serving as general counsel for Dixie Companies, LLC., is survived by his wife and two daughters.

A celebration of life service has been scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Covenant Presbyterian Church followed by a visitation in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, the Lassiter family has asked for memorial contributions to be made to the church with the designation as followed:{}{}
