Small plane crash in Helena sends 4 to hospital with serious injuries

      UPDATE: ABC 33/40 has learned the names of three of the four victims injured in a small plane crash in Helena Thursday afternoon.Danny Smith, Sharon Smith, Andy Smith and one other passenger were injured when the Piper 32A aircraft they were traveling in from Panama City, Fla. to Tennessee crashed in a yard just off Morgan Road in Jefferson County. The unidentified passenger is a 17-year-old girl.


      HELENA, Alabama -- Authorities are investigating a small plane crash in Helena Thursday afternoon, a fire spokesman said.The plane went down shortly after 2 p.m. in a yard off Morgan Road. Officials say four people were injured in the crash, though, their conditions are unknown at this time. However, Helena Mayor Mark Hall tweeted that the victims are expected to survive. "At this point all 4 victims of today's plane crash in the @CityofHelena are all expected to survive," Hall said on Twitter.

      The plane was reportedly trying to make it to the Bessemer airport before crashing. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Helena police are assisting at the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an accident investigation. ABC 33/40 has a crew at the scene and will provide updates as more information is made available.
