A 55-year-old man was arrested Thursday on two felony counts of failing to register as a sex offender and violation of the sex offender law, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Samuel Sumerlin was taken into custody by deputies and officers with the Vestavia Hills Police Department at a home in the 1600 block of Belvedere Drive following the execution of a search warrant.
Along with the three original charges stemming from Jefferson County, four additional charges were filed against Sumerlin by investigators in Vestavia Hills. He was charged with failure to notify of new residence, living within 2,000 feet of a school or daycare, failure to obtain or possess valid identification and illegal possession of a pistol. Each of the four counts carried bonds of $50,000.
Sumerlin is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond due to the violation of the sex offender law.
Miranda Sumerlin, 39, was also arrested at the home, charged with harboring a sex offender. Investigators later obtained a felony warrant for the charge. She is being held at the Jefferson County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
