Birmingham police are investigating after a 6-year-old brings a gun to school Monday.
Investigators say they were called to Central Park Elementary School. After further investigation, police determined that the girl's mother was involved in a car accident Sunday night that resulted in her car being totaled. In the process of transferring from the wrecked car to another car, police say the gun was placed in the child's backpack by her aunt. On Monday morning, the girl went to school and around lunchtime she tried to get a snack from her backpack and noticed a gun was inside. She told a friend to tell her teacher about it. The teacher notified office staff and police were called. No word on whether the gun was loaded.
