624 Alabamians Select Health Plans On Insurance Marketplace

Only a fraction of Alabama's uninsured selected health insurance plans from the federally run health insurance marketplace,, during the first month of enrollment.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says of the 677,000 Alabamians without health insurance, only 624 Alabamians enrolled.{} That number is only one-tenth of 1 percent of Alabama's uninsured.

The department says more than 10,500 applications were completed October, on behalf of more than 20,800 people.{} Of that number, 4,910 were eligible to enroll in a plan with federal financial assistance, but very few followed through and selected a plan.{} The report also notes that more than 2,260 were eligible for Medicaid or Alabama's health insurance plan for children.{}{} {}Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius believes these numbers will increase.
