A 68-year-old woman has died after the vehicle she was driving Friday night crashed into Star Lake in Hoover.
Hoover police and fire responded to a report of a submerged vehicle at around 9:30 p.m. A rescue dive team was also called to the scene and divers worked feverishly to pull the victim from the car. She was transported to Brookwood Hospital where she was pronounced deceased a short time later.
"This case involved a very rapid response and intense effort by members of the Hoover Police and Fire Departments." Coker said in a release Saturday. "This case involved Police Patrol officers, and officers who were on duty who are members of the Hoover Police Dive Team as well as many Hoover Firefighters, including the Technical Rescue Unit."
The victim had attended an event at the nearby Hoover Country Club before the accident which remains under investigation by Hoover police. Investigators will attempt to determine the cause of the incident by reconstructing the accident, a process that may take several days due to the nature of the event.
"The City of Hoover, the Hoover Police Department and the Hoover Fire Department jointly express our condolences to the family of the victim in this tragic crash." Coker stated.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has not yet released the woman's identity or the official cause of death.
"We do not believe at this time that this was anything other than a tragic accident; weather may have been a contributing factor." Coker said.
