Jefferson County deputies say a teacher at Center Point Elementary School observed a child showing a handgun to another student on Thursday.
The teacher immediately took the gun and notified the principal and school resource officer. The gun was loaded. The child's parents were notified. Investigators say early reports show the gun belonged to the child's grandfather, but it has not been determined how the child got it. The child has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing with the Jefferson County Board of Education.
Under Alabama law, the child is too young to face criminal charges.
