Accrediting team to head to Birmingham to review district status

A team will arrive in Birmingham next week to review the status of the city's school system.

The school system was placed on probation last year, mainly because of infighting among school board leaders at the time. Since then, the district has obtained several new board members, more money in its reserve and the opportunity to hold its meetings without state officials presiding.Part of the requirements listed by Advance Ed included improving governance and leadership.Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon says he hopes, with the changes, the probation will be lifted soon. He also tells ABC 33/40 that, after Advance Ed completes its review, it will release a status report within two months.
