Actress Rosario Dawson coming to UAB

Actress, singer and activist Rosario Dawson is coming to the Magic City. {}Dawson{}will givea free, public lecture at the University of Alabama at Birmingham 7 p.m. Thursday, September 20, 2012.The event, part of the campus-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, willbe held in UAB's AlysStephens Center.

Dawson has been featured in many films, including "Josie andthe Pussycats," "Men in Black II," "25th Hour," "The Rundown," "Alexander,""Sin City" and "Eagle." The New York native recently was seen in "Percy Jackson& The Olympians: The Lightning Thief" as Persephone. She also is the starof an online sci-fi series, "Gemini Division," which debuted in August 2008.

In addition to her stage work, Dawson also co-founded thenon-partisan organization Voto Latino in 2004, which says it works to promotean enfranchised America by leveraging celebrity voices, the latest technologyand youth themselves to promote positive change.

Dawson serves on the board of directors for V-Day andScenarios USA and has also lent her support to numerous organizations, such asAmnesty International; Lower East Side Girls Club; ONE Campaign; Oxfam;Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); Twenty Women ForDarfur; and Youth AIDS.
