MILTON, Ga. -- The second-ranked Alabama men's golf team shot 2-over-par 282 in the final round of stroke-play qualifying on Thursday at the 2013 NCAA Golf Championships to tie for third and garner the No. 3 seed in match play on the par-70, 7,319-yard Crabapple Course at the Capital City Club.

The Crimson Tide finished 7-under-par 833 after 54 holes to tie Texas for third place. The Tide won the tiebreaker by virtue of a better cumulative drop score and will face New Mexico, Texas A&M, UNLV or Arizona State in the quarterfinals of match play at 11:15 a.m. (CDT) on Friday. Those four teams are in a playoff for the final three spots this evening.

California will be the top seed after shooting 16-under-par 824 over 54 holes while host Georgia Tech was second at 10-under 830. Illinois finished fifth at 5-under 835. A&M, New Mexico, UNLV and Arizona State tied for sixth at 2-over 842.

"We have now entered the national championships tournament," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "They battled really hard today. We got off to an average start at best, but the guys battled and made some birdies. We have accomplished one goal, which is to play in the championships (match play). We wish we would have played better, but we have a chance to play for the title."

Alabama's Justin Thomas and Cory Whitsett both tied for 16th individually to lead the Crimson Tide at 3-under-par 207. Whitsett was among three Tide players to shoot even-par 70 on Thursday.

A junior from Houston, Whitsett made back-to-back birdies on the 12th and 13th holes with bogeys on the third and 17th. Thomas, a sophomore from Goshen, Ky., shot 72 in the third round with bogeys on the 16th and 18th to slip out of the top 10 individually.

Alabama also got even-par rounds of 70 from juniors Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax. Wyatt, from Mobile, finished tied for 26th at 1-under-par 209. Mullinax tied for 49th at 2-over-par 212. Senior Scott Strohmeyer was the Tide's drop score on Thursday at 73 and finished tied for 69th at 4-over 214.

The tiebreaker went Alabama's way with a cumulative total of 6-over par among the dropped scores from each round while Texas' three-drop scores were 8-over. UA's three drop scores were a 72 by Mullinax in round one, a 71 by Wyatt in the second round and a 73 by Strohmeyer on Thursday.
