MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Former Republican Rep. Greg Wren of Montgomery has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor ethics violation and agreed to cooperate with state prosecutors.

Wren entered the plea Tuesday morning in a Montgomery courtroom. His attorney, James Anderson, says Wren made an unintentional violation of state ethics law. Anderson says Wren did not know a company he represented also had a relationship with an Alabama business. He says that Alabama business would have benefited from language that Wren added to the state budget last year.

The plea came shortly after Wren resigned from the Legislature. He sent a letter to the clerk of the House Tuesday morning saying his resignation was immediate.

The 59-year-old Wren was serving his fourth term in the Legislature.
