The Alabama football team was in full pads for the first time during its fifth practice of Fall Camp Tuesday afternoon, and Nick Saban said after it was an exciting day for his players.

"I remember when back when I played as a player, no matter how much Summer conditioning you did or how many practices you had, the first day of pads if you're a football player is always something that's a little bit special," Saban said during his post-practice news conference.

Storms moving through Tuscaloosa forced the team inside for a two-hour practice, and players enjoyed the air conditioned Thomas Drew Practice Facility as it continued preparations for its season opener against Virginia Tech on August 31 in Atlanta, Ga.

Saban said the break from the heat allowed players to increase their "mental intensity" and they seemed to have more focus during drills."We had much better mental intensity, players were focusing better during drills, better attention to detail," Saban said.

While he was pleased with his team's overall performance, Saban wants the same type of intensity no matter the temperature or circumstances.

"The key to the drill is we're trying to create difficulty circumstances so that the players do have to struggle to have the same kind of intensity, the same kind of attention to detail in difficult circumstances," Saban said. "That's the one thing we need to prove we can do{} as a team and continue to get better."
