Alabama Spay/Neuter hits milestone

Alabama Spay/Neuter in Irondale says it will have performed 50,000 spay or neuter surgeries by the end of today. {}In a news release, the program says the surgeries "have been a driving force in reducing the overpopulation of dogs and cats in Birmingham and the surrounding areas."

The clinic opened in June of 2008, and they say since that time, numerous clinics have seen a decline in the number of animals euthanized each year. {}For example, they site Blount County which has seen a 30% decrease in the number of animals taken in and a 37% decrease of animals being put to sleep.
