      Alabama unemployment rate spikes in July

      Alabama's preliminary unemployment rate rose to 8.3 percent in July, up from 7.8 percent in June.

      For the first time in a long time, Alabama's unemployment rate matches the national average, which also stands at 8.3 percent.

      Shelby County has the lowest unemployment rate at 6 percent. Wilcox County has the highest at 19.6 percent.
