The governor has declared the next seven days Severe Weather Awareness Week. His office is working with the National Weather Service and other emergency agencies to help prepare Alabamians for possible severe weather this spring.
Emergency agencies say advance planning can help save lives.
The NWS will focus on educating people about a different weather event each day. The topic Monday will be severe thunderstorms followed by lightning Tuesday, tornadoes Wednesday, and flash flooding Thursday. On Friday, NWS will provide more information about what services it offers and the role it plays in severe weather.
As part of Wednesday's tornado focus, everyone is encouraged to participate in a tornado safety drill at 9 a.m..
The week typically ends with a tax free holiday on items needed in the event of severe weather.
