Alabaster to roll out mile-long medical marketing plan

The City of Alabaster has plans to roll out a mile-long medical marking promotion called Main Street Medical Mile starting in March.

The plan is to promote a portion of Highway 31 that stretches from around Industrial Road to First Avenue West. The stretch is home to more than 1,000 healthcare professionals and approximately 300 services.

"A lot of people driving up Interstate 65 don't know that there's even a hospital here," said Alabaster City Councilwoman Stacy Rakestraw.

Rakestraw is behind the idea. While visiting family in Jonesboro, Ark., she saw a billboard for the city's Matthews Medical Mile and realized a similar promotion would benefit Alabaster.

Soon, you'll see banners, brochures and more.

"Plus we will have signs and directories people can walk up to," added Rakestraw.

Rakestraw hopes to attract more businesses to help revitalize downtown.
