Prison inmates to get jobs of 119 people in west Alabama

An apparel plant in Fayette that makes clothing for the U.S. Military will begin closing at the end of October.{} Ultimately, 119 people at American Power Source will lose their job.

The federal government is transferring the sewing work to inmates in federal prisons, a program which began 1934.{} We're told the announcement was met with tears and anger.

"We are angry because we are tax-paying, law-abiding citizens.{} Most of the people who work here are female, 99%{}I would say. A lot of them are single moms," said Cathy Griffith, with American Power Source.

A sister plant in Columbus, Miss.{}will also close,{}leaving 142 people there without a job.
