Former Alabama player Ozell Powell shot to death in Greenville; 1 suspect arrested
GREENVILLE, Ala. (AP) Greenville police said Thursday they had arrested a man in the slaying of former University of Alabama football player Ozell Powell.Eric Simmons, 22, was arrested in the fatal shooting of Powell, 40, of Greenville, said Police Chief Lonzo Ingram.Ingram said the motive in the killing wasn't clear."We've got one person and are looking for another one," he said. "After we get the other one we'll know more about it."Powell was shot twice in the chest at an apartment complex and died later at a hospital.Powell played at Alabama from 1993 through 1996, starting 25 games on the defensive line. Powell was on the practice team for the NFL's Washington Redskins in 1997 and 1998 and he signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent in 2000.Powell was later with the Birmingham franchise of the defunct XFL, and Ingram said the player returned to his hometown a few years ago.
