Auburn closes in on naming starting QB

Auburn started the week by narrowing down it's starting quarterback race.

It could name a winner by the end of it.

Tigers coach Gus Malzahn hinted that a decision could come at any point this weekend.

"It could be tomorrow, it could be the next day, Saturday or Sunday," Malzahn said. "Anytime before Monday would be really good for us, but like I've said before, we're not sure."

The quarterback battle appears to be down to two, junior college transfer Nick Marshall and true freshman Jeremy Johnson. They've been splitting reps at the position this week but coaches maintain that sophomore Jonathan Wallace is also in the mix for the quarterback job.

Auburn announced on Monday that former quarterback Kiehl Frazier would switch positions and become a safety.

"We have a lot of stuff figured out, but there's still a few little question marks--not very many" Malzahn said. "There's still a few that we'll try to answer. (Saturday) will be two weeks from the first game so you'd like to have the pieces of the puzzle in place. That's the best case scenario."

Auburn is scheduled to hold it's fourth scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon at Jordan Hare Stadium.

The Tigers open the season at home against Washington State on August 31.
