Fundraiser event Saturday for injured Gadsden police officer

Friends of a Gadsden police{}officer hospitalized with a head injury are raising money to help cover{}some of his family's expenses.{} Dozens of businesses donated items for an auction to benefit the Gary Pierce Recovery Fund.

Pierce suffered his injuries Saturday when a truck collided with his motorcycle.{} He is a Gadsden police officer who serves as the Sergeant of Operations for the Etowah County Drug Task Force.

The commander of the narcotics unit, Rob Savage, said Pierce is showing small signs of improvement.{} Savage said it will be a long road to recovery, but friends and family remain positive about Pierce's progress.

"For the past 24 hours he's been breathing on his own.{} They believe within the next 24 hours that{}he could come completely off of the vent," friend Craig Pruett said.

"I've been told that he has responded to voice commands from raising his fingers to given a thumbs up, to moving his feet.{} All which is great progress for Gary's situation right now."

Brute Fitness is hosting a Crossfit competition at 10 a.m. Saturday, with an auction at 11.{} Pierce worked out at the gym a few times, and members said Pierce's daughter Courtney is a regular.

"I've never met him, but{}I know Courtney, and we just want to do all that we can as a Brute family here to help them as a family," Stephen White said.

"We have to have bidders, so we encourage everyone to come out and bid for this awesome chance to give back to a person who gives his life to protect us here in Gadsden."

The event is at Brute Fitness, at the intersection of Locust Street{}and Third Street in downtown Gadsden.{} Registration for the Crossfit competition is at 9 a.m.{} The entry fee is a donation of any amount to the Gary Pierce Recovery Fund.{} All proceeds from the competition and the auction will go to Pierce's family.{} They will accept cash and checks, but no credit cards.
