Authorities say Jefferson County man stole another man's house

Jefferson County Sheriff's detectives are searching for a man they believe stole another man's house and identity.

Jafton Richardson, 41, is charged with burglary, identity theft and forgery for moving his family into a vacant house on Ridgefield Road in the Winewood community last year.

He reportedly used old checks, which were left by the homeowner who had moved several years ago, to pay for renovations, carpet cleaning, and utility bills.{}

"Their child was enrolled in the local school system," said Jefferson County Sgt. Mike Yarbrough. "So they had actually moved in. They considered it their home."

Authorities said the suspect filed for ownership of the residence with Jefferson County court system through the state's adverse possession law. Richardson has filed for possession of at least six more properties.

"He stole his identity and he moved into his home," added Sgt. Yarbrough. "He could do it anywhere else, anywhere in this county or in this state. He needs to be caught."
