Battle continues over Cooper Green Mercy Hospital

The battle continued Thursday in the fight to save Cooper Green Mercy Hospital.

Thursday morning, Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos held a meeting with several lawmakers to discuss the hospital's transition into an urgent care center.

Last week, more than 200 employees were notified they'd be on administrative leave without pay beginning Monday. Many have appealed the county's decision.

"You don't punish folks this way," said Representative John Rogers, (D) Birmingham.

Rogers claimed the county violated federal regulations when notifying employees of Monday's layoffs. Birmingham Attorney Emory Anthony delivered a letter Thursday to county employees asking them to{}follow another personnel board rule.

"You don't use the Administrative leave without pay to{}lay off employees{}for budgetary reasons," said Anthony. "You have to do a reduction in force."

Petelos said the county lawfully notified employees.
