BBVA Compass Bowl draws thousands to the Magic city
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
Saturday around noon, traffic on I-65 was backed up for miles. That's because Mississippi and Pittsburgh fans showed their team spirit today at Legion field.
Birmingham police say roughly 80 officers were working to get the traffic moving.
It was so congested; tailgating fans parked at local churches and walked miles just to get to Legion field.
Organizers say the game drew in 50,000 people; most fans started tailgating just hours before the game which is why traffic was so bad.
Sgt. Heath Boackle with the BPD says "We had a lot of people that just came in at one time. Whether there was a lot of tailgating activity that took place the night before and things like that. So we had a little bit of traffic congestion."
Traffic cleared up after the game, Mississippi beat Pittsburgh 38-17.
