The Birmingham Barons will have a big league bat in the line up on opening night.
White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham will begin a rehab assignment with the Barons on Thursday and will be the designated hitter in the teams season opening game in Montgomery that night.
Beckham is recovering from a strained right oblique he suffered two week's ago.
He spent part of the 2009 season in Birmingham and hit .299 with four home runs and 22 RBIs in 38 games. He was elected to the Southern League All-Star game.
Over five major league seasons, Beckham has hit .249 with 54 home runs, 291 runs scored and 240 RBIs.
The Barons open the season against Montgomery Thursday night at 6:30 at Riverwalk Stadium.
