Bessemer teen killed in overnight homicide

TheJefferson County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight homicide thatoccurred on Fairfax Avenue. Deputies responded to UAB West Hospital earlySaturday morning in response to a gunshot victim. The person was transportedthere via private automobile. The victim, 19-year-old Jaterius Jacquel Mason,of Bessemer, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

Deputiesinterviewed two people who drove Mason to the hospital. The individuals originallylied and told deputies the shooting happened while the victim was standingoutside a car on Powder Plant Road. It was later determined Mason was actuallyshot at a home on Fairfax Avenue in Bessemer.

CareyDmartin Williams, 19, of Bessemer has been identified as the shooter. He hasbeen arrested for murder. A motive has not been determined.

Williamsis currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
