Birmingham airport construction nears completion, new features

As construction continues on the modernization project at the Birmingham Shuttlesworth International airport, ABC 33/40 is getting a sneak peek of the progress.

There are several new features in Concourse C, including a new event hall with a view of the airfield, five additional restaurants, a nursing room for mothers and a meditation space.Concourse C will also include gates for Southwest and United Airlines and room for expansion."Once Phase 2 has opened and the two international spots are vacated from our current carrier, it will give us the capability to accept international flights," Airport spokesperson Toni Herrera- Bast says.The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute is also building an exhibit honoring the life of civil rights icon Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth.The project costs more than $201 million. It's expected to be completed by the end of June.Stay with ABC 33/40 for more on this developing story.
