The Birmingham Barons hit a home run long Tuesday long before the first pitch was thrown. Ballpark.com named Regions Field "Ballpark of the Year."
"This ballpark is creating some kind of special buzz for Birmingham and the Barons and doing so many great things for the entire community," said General Manager Jonathan Nelson.
The Birmingham ballpark beat out all new major and minor league parks in the nation, including the new Yankee stadium, for the title.
The Barons have played to several sold out crowds. It's creating a lot of buzz and business development downtown.
"It was a team effort from a community standpoint. That's what makes it special. It fulfills so many needs and accomplishes so many things," said "It is certainly not the finish line for the Birmingham Barons or downtown development. It's just the beginning."
David Fleming of REV Birmingham says it's bringing more people downtown and changing their perspective about the area. As a result, he says there's more businesses showing interest in nearby space.
"People have a variety of reasons to come downtown- live, work, play, It's truly becoming that kind of district," he said.
Design and fan amenities were taken into consideration when selecting the winning ballpark.
