Fire and rescue crews were called to the scene at the intersection of 8th Street and University Boulevard shortly after midnight and rescued the motorist, who could be seen being escorted by a firefighter to safety while they both navigated through waist-deep flood waters.

Several areas around the city have experienced significant rainfall, causing many roads to become impassable. Shortly after the water rescue, the National Weather Service in Birmingham issued a tornado watch for 31 counties in the state, including Jefferson County, until 8 a.m.
