City leaders will address issues of violence, economic development and education during a "State of Black America" conference Thursday at Miles College.
The Birmingham chapter of the Urban League Young Professionals will present the event, which is free and open to the public.
Organizer William Barnes says Mayor William Bell will kick off the event with an onstage talk and Police Chief A.C. Roper will be on a panel regarding youth violence. Other guest panelists include Former United States Congressman Earl Hilliard, Sr., Former Federal Judge U.W. Clemon and State Senator Linda Coleman among others.
"I am please to announce that the report reveals significant gains in the last 50 years: a decrease in poverty and an increase in education," said Birmingham Urban League YP President William A. Barnes. "However, the disparities between white Americans and black Americans as it relates to income, jobs, wealth, and health care remain stagnate and alarmingly significant."
