Next week, more than 70 students from six Birmingham city middle schools will compete in the second SpeakFirst Middle School Debate League tournament. SpeakFirst is a collaborative effort between Impact Alabama and the Birmingham City school district.
Hayes K-8 School, Huffman Middle School, John Herbert Phillips Academy, Wilkerson Middle School, William J. Christian k-8 School, and Putnam Middle School students will participate. Debaters at the tournament will consider whether schools should pay students to in order to improve academic performance. The debaters have conducted research, collected evidence, and written analyses of the topic.
The SpeakFirst Middle School Debate will be held Monday, October 28 from 4:30-8:00 p.m. at Phillips Academy.
