Birmingham Police Academy graduates 32 new officers

The Birmingham Police Academy graduated 32 new officers Friday.

The police academy held a ceremony at the BJCC in downtown Birmingham. U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance was the guest speaker. Several precinct commanders and bureau leaders took part.Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper says increasing the force can mean safer streets."It's important that we keep our personnel strength up so that our officers can go out and make a difference," Roper says.He adds the police academy is 20 weeks long but training doesn't end with the graduation. Chief Roper says the graduates will {}now go into a 16-week field training program, which includes evaluation from senior officers.
