Birmingham Police charge suspect in three robbery investigations

Birmingham Police have apprehended and charged a suspect in three area robberies, according to a release.

Robert Tarver, 58, of Birmingham has been charged with three counts of first-degree robbery in connection with two area bank robberies and one robbery of a cab driver.

Tarver allegedly robbed the Wells Fargo Bank on 18th Street South on Sept. 13, the PNC Bank located on 1st Avenue North on Sept. 17. and a cab driver on Sept. 12.

A witness followed Tarver after he fled from the PNC Bank in a U-Haul truck on Monday and called police dispatch to give directions to officers in pursuit.{} After following the suspect for several blocks, authorities were able to apprehend Tarver after he wrecked the moving truck.{} They recovered cash and a handgun.

Tarver is currently being treated in a hospital for injuries he sustained during the truck accident.{} He will be transferred to Jefferson County Jail upon his release.
