Birmingham Police investigating Sunday morning homicide, officer-involved shooting
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
Police are conducting a homicide investigation in the death of a 22-year-old Birmingham man.
The incident occurred early Sunday morning in the 10 block of 17th Street North at approximately 2:00 a.m. An officer observed suspects firing a weapon from a car at a man. The officer discharged his weapon at the suspects, but nobody was struck. A security guard working in the area, as well as a Birmingham Police officer working an off-duty security detail responded to the scene. They also discharged their weapons.
The suspects managed to leave the scene in their vehicle. A short time later, officers discovered the vehicle in the 3400 block of 1st Ave North. Two suspects were taken into custody as they attempted to leave in another car that came to pick them up.
The victim was identified as Oscar Wayne Johnson, 22, of Birmingham. Johnson was transported to UAB for treatment, where he died shortly after arriving.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigations responded to the scene to investigate the officer-involved shooting. Birmingham Police Department's Internal Affairs Unit will also be investigating.
