BPD: One in custody after officer accidentally shoots himself during investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports that a Birmingham Police officer was injured as he investigated a weapon violation. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday.Birmingham Police officers observed two subjects running with firearms at 18th Street and 31st Avenue North. Officers were able to stop and detain the subjects and attempt to verify permits for the weapons. During this time, the subjects told officers that they were involved in a foot chase with subjects that were attempting to break into a nearby business. While investigation the incident, one BPD officer attempted to unload one of the weapons in an effort to make it safe.{} During this time, the weapon cylinder fell from the weapon striking the ground. As the cylinder hit the ground, a bullet discharged striking the officer in the leg. The officer was transported to U.A.B. Hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening injury. Only one subject was found to have a valid permit for his weapon. One subject was arrested. Officers were unable to locate the reported burglary suspects. An internal investigation is ongoing along with the criminal investigation.The suspect has been identified as: Michael Edward New, W/M, 48, of Crane Hill, Alabama. A Violation of State Firearms Act warrant has been obtained against the suspect.
