Birmingham police: Jeff State student arrested after filing false kidnapping report
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
An 18-year-old woman who claimed to be kidnapped has confessed to making up the whole ordeal, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
Gabrielle Coleman notified family members, Tuesday, saying she had been kidnapped by two unknown white males. She claimed she was abducted from Jefferson State Community College. A short time later, members of the NET, CRT and Homicide Unit found Coleman.
Wednesday, Coleman confessed she had not been kidnapped and made the entire story up. She says after leaving school with a friend, she went to a house where alcoholic beverages were being served and no males were present.
According to police, Coleman told the lie in order to spend time with her friends.
Police say it was also revealed that Coleman made a similar claim of kidnapping while she was in high school that also turned out to be a lie.
A warrant has been issued against Coleman for filing a false police report, which is a misdemeanor.
The Birmingham Police Department says this incident will not deter nor hinder investigators from future reported crimes, but are stressing the importance and severity of reporting false claims.
