Birmingham gets "called out" online over crime
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
Birmingham residents are at odds over a simple question; Is crime in the magic city up or down? Research by neighborhoodscout.com shows Birmingham is the 20th most dangerous city in the country.
The research is based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Those crimes include murder, forcible rape, armed robbery and aggravated assault. The site shows that Birmingham has 85 violent crimes per 1,000 residents.
Lt. Sean Edwards with Birmingham Police Department says the research is a flawed. "We don't know who the people are, who actually do the research. We don't know their credentials, their credibility. They're bringing in numbers that we're not familiar with," says Edwards.
Edwards says last year at this time Birmingham has had seven homicides, but this year no homicides have been reported.
