Birmingham roads among roughest in nation, according to new report

Birmingham roads are among the roughest in the nation.{} That's according to a new report by TRIP.{} The report, "Bumpy Roads Ahead: America's Roughest Rides and Strategies to Make Our Roads Smoother", says 36% of major roads in the Birmingham area are in poor condition.{} It's costing area drivers $601 each year in additional vehicle operating costs.{} The Birmingham area also ranks 18th among large cities in the annual cost to motorists of driving on rough roads.

In 2011, more than one-quarter (27%) of the nation's major urban roads (interstates, freeways and other arterial routes) had pavements that were in substandard condition and provided an unacceptably rough ride to drivers, costing the average driver $377 annually.{} The nationwide annual cost of driving on deteriorated roads totals $80 billion.
