Birmingham School Board to vote on delaying special election on tax increase

The Birmingham School Board is expected to vote Tuesday on delaying a special election supporting a property tax increase.

School Board President Randall Woodfin tells ABC 33/40 board members are considering moving the election from September 9, 2014 to February 10, 2015.

Woodfin says the change would give the district more time to educate the public about the tax hike as well as give Jefferson County more time to shore up resources.

If approved, the tax increase would raise nearly $8 million for city schools annually. Woodfin also says a homeowner with a house valued at $100,000 would end up paying $30 in additional taxes each year.
