Birmingham Water Works Board to get details on impact of cutting service to some counties
The Birmingham Water Works Board is expected to hear the results of a study Thursday afternoon concerning only serving customers in Jefferson County. The Board currently serves Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Blount and Walker Counties. According to board records, the 91 percent of its customer base lives in Jefferson County.A source tells ABC 33/40 board members will receive information on how much customers and the board can expect rates to be if the change takes effect. The decision to sell the four counties comes on the heels of four proposed state bills to expand the board to include members of other counties. Those bills would expand the board to a total of 9 members, putting four members from Birmingham in a minority. Birmingham City leaders argue the change would dilute power from Birmingham. The bills also include measures including capping board pay and requiring public meetings.Stay with ABC 33/40 for more on this story.
