Birmingham Zoo welcomes two Red Panda Cubs
BIRMINGHAM - AL —
The Birmingham Zoo is now home to the first set of Red Pandas born in the United States this year.
This is the first litter for the 3-year-old mom named Sorrell and the 4-year-old father named Shifu. The cubs were born May 30 and are currently being housed off-exhibit with their mother.
As a member of a list of threatened species, the birth of the pandas is considered to be a significant milestone seeing as there are less than 2,500 red adult pandas left in the world.
In the wild, the pandas live in the bamboo forests of China. Red pandas are delicate at birth and stay close to their mothers until they are around 3 months old.
Zoo officials say Sorrel is very protective of the cubs and is nursing regularly. As long as things continue to go well, zoo officials say visitors can expect to see the cubs in the fall.
