Blood drive needed because of summer slowdown

Beach trips, mountain getaways, and even staycations do a world of good for everyone. They play havoc with blood donations!

Beginning September 25, UAB Hospital, UAB Highlands, and the American Red Cross are launching an eight-day blood drive to help catch up. The hours are Monday through Thursday from 10a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, September 28 from 7:00a.m. to 2 p.m. at UAB. The hours at UAB Highlands are Wednesday, October 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday, October 4 from 6:30 a.m. to 5. p.m.

Blood donors may give at UAB Hospital North Pavilion second-floor atrium and the first-floor lobby of UAB Highlands Hospital. An appointment may be made at, sponsor code UABNP. A donor can give blood up to six times within a year. The process from start to finish typically takes just 45 minutes. To give, a donor needs to have a photo ID.

UAB ranks in the top five among hospitals supplied by the Red Cross. It is one of the nation's largest users of blood products.
