Body found in water at East Lake Park confirmed as Florence

Glenn Paul Florence

It's a family event for Teri Thomas.

Twice a week her family comes to East Lake Park to fish. But, Tuesday, wasn't a normal day at the fishing hole.

"It was definitely shocking," Thomas said.

Just across the way, her family witnessed something dreadful.

"Just before three o'clock, today, a citizen phoned and said there was{}a body in the water at East Lake Park," Birmingham Police Sgt. Johnny Williams, said.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue pulled the body from the water, examined it and then took it away.

Thomas, and her grandchildren, saw everything.

"I explained to them that there was a body over there and that's what the police and paramedics were over there doing," Thomas said.

The Jefferson County Coroner has confirmed the body to be 61-year-old Glenn Paul Florence. He'd been missing since Sunday, believed to be at East Lake Park.

Neighbors around Florence's home on Westridge Drive, Tuesday, say their thoughts and prayers are with Florence's family.

It's the same sentiment from East Lake Community President, Robert Walker.

"We offer heartfelt condolences and the East Lake community is going to continue to work with the Birmingham Police Department and the park board and recreation to make sure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time here at East Lake Park," Walker said.

The coroner says a cause of death has not yet been determined.
