BPD Investigate Homicide that occurred across the street from the Police station

A 22 year old man was killed in a drive by shooting this morning. The victim was Oscar Wayne Johnson. The shooting was right across the street from the police station, near downtown lounge.

Two men are now in custody, but their names have not been released. Now the ABI is investigating the officer involved shooting.

According to a press release, A North Precinct officer observed suspects firing a weapon at the victim from a white vehicle. The officer discharged his weapon at the suspects as a BPD officer working an off-duty security detail responded to assist. A security guard working in the area also responded to assist BPD officers. The responding off-duty officer and security guard also discharged their weapons at the suspects. The suspects managed to flee the area in their vehicle. South Precinct officers located the suspects' vehicle a short time later in the 3400 block of 1st Avenue North.{} Two suspects were taken into custody as they attempted to leave in a vehicle that arrived to pick them up. {}

Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded and transported the victim to U.A.B Hospital for treatment. Hospital staff pronounced the victim deceased shortly after arrival.

City Councilman Johnathan Austin says, "We have to make sure that they're laws in place that protect our citizens. And as chairman of public safety, that's my responsibility, is the safety of the public."

But this case leaves people stunned, they now feel like it's unsafe to go clubbing in Birmingham.

Daniel Rogers says, "I can't do this anymore. That's like the third death this year at a club, a club is for fun and this isn't fun."
